The History of O’Toole Companies

  • O’Toole Inc. has been family owned and operated for over 40 years.
  • Greg O’Toole established O’Toole Lime in 1981; he started with the purchase of an Ag Lime Spreader and himself as the sole employee.
  • In 1986 he began selling fertilizer, then in 1989 he purchased the Weber & Houston Fertilizer Plant in Columbus Junction, O’Toole Inc was founded.
  • Then in 1991, Greg purchased 5 acres from the RD Hafner Farms outside of Letts, Iowa and built the current anhydrous facility and the home office of O’Toole Inc.
  • In 2002 Greg O’Toole purchased Blue Flame Propane, LLC and started the retail propane division.
  • In 2009 Josh O’Toole joined the company when he and Greg purchased Nichols Ag (established in 1972) and Muscatine Ag (established in 1999) expanding their footprint in the Ag retail business. This combination of organizations working together became known to employees and customers as the O’Toole Companies.
  • From 2009 – 2016 the only grain facilities within the O’Toole Companies were Nichols Ag and Muscatine Ag’s small grain set-ups.
  • In 2017 Nichols Ag added a 500,000 bushel grain bin and 24 hour corn dumping automation to their location. In addition, Greg & Josh O’Toole purchased the Frytown grain facility and leased the Tiffin Grain Facility gaining the ability to service more of our overall customer base on the grain side of the business.
  • In 2020 the grain business grew again with the purchase of the Columbus Junction Grain facilities.
  • In 2021 the West Liberty and Wilton facilities were added to the company.
  • In 2022 – 24 hour soybean dumping automation was added to the Columbus Junction and West Liberty facilities.
  • All these changes and growth have allowed O’Toole Companies to more effectively service over 750 customers in 10 counties while employing over 65 local people.
  • In 2023 The O’Toole Companies agronomy facilities (which include O’Toole Inc., Nichols Ag and Muscatine Ag) were listed as #83 of the top 100 Agribusinesses in the United States by Crop Life Magazine.
